Perry is Perry is a Chicago native, born to Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. Her first television appearances were Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother played her role. The actress did not go on to pursue acting as a career until after she had reached adulthood, as her parents were concerned about the adverse consequences stress can be a cause of. Perry confessed that she wasn't confident in her acting during high school, but started performing as a means to make friends during her time at Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry had the opportunity to secure tiny TV roles on Law & Order: Criminal Intent after she graduated. Homesickness, however, brought her back to California again where she began performing in the stage. Perry performed with her mom in The Other Place at Broadway at the end of 2013. She performed with the father of her character Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in 2015 at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry was in nine episodes of the ABC thriller The Family in 2016. In 2017, Perry starred in a role on ABC's political thriller Scandal alongside her father. That same year her character was cast a younger character of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) on Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again as a teen character of her mom's character. The character was assigned by audition regardless of the fact that she has a family tie to the character.
